Our social services department provides activities and programs designed to help individuals who are blind or experiencing vision loss. This support comes in many forms including sighted guide/transportation for essential appointments, assistance with daily tasks such as reading mail and grocery shopping, and peer support groups.
The emotional adjustment to losing your vision can sometimes be the most difficult part of the process. Our Educational and Peer Support groups, Life Skills and Education classes and Community Outings provide opportunities for clients to talk to others who are in, or have been in, similar situations. Knowing you are not alone and that there are others who have overcome these same challenges is usually the first step in regaining one’s independence.
Our family-centered Early Intervention program provides support and services to children ages birth-three with developmental delays and disabilities. These services help enhance development in many areas including physical, cognitive, communication, social and emotional development.
Our Low Vision Store offers cooking utensils and kitchen products, handheld and electronic magnifiers, talking clocks and watches, writing and communication supplies, large-print games and playing cards, Eschenbach sunglasses, low-vision lamps, tactile marking products (to identify buttons and settings on appliances and other devices), large button telephones and remote controls, and more.
Our Assistive Technology Specialist helps educate blind and visually impaired clients on the latest technology to enhance independence. Services include evaluating a client’s needs and abilities, providing training on the best assistive technology for them, and providing technical assistance to clients, family members and employers to effectively put assistive technology to work.
We believe eye care should be accessible to everyone. Through our eye care assistance programs, we assist low-income individuals in obtaining eye exams and glasses and provide income-eligible children with an opportunity for a complete eye exam with a pediatric optometrist.
Our Occupational Therapy services help assess visual impairments and help clients address an overcome low-vision challenges. We train clients in the use of adaptive equipment and techniques, and educate caregivers and family members to help people who are visually-impaired live an independent life.
